LEGO track planning software – a guide by LEGO train nerds
It can be hard to visualise a plan for your LEGO city or train layout, and it’s not a new problem – LEGO fans have been changing their cities since LEGO cities existed! There are now a plethora of LEGO track planning options available, so we’ve put together a handy guide on LEGO train track planning software and apps.
LEGO train tracks have some strange geometry (see L-Gauge,’s guide and Brickpile’s original article), and keeping track of how this effects your track layout alongside planning building locations and where custom tracks will meet up makes even relatively simple LEGO railway displays hard to keep track of (pun intended) in your head.
The classic LEGO track planner – BlueBrick
BlueBrick has been around for a long time, and is still in active development, being the go-to option for track planning for the LEGO train community.
- Established software present in the community and still in development
- Large part library including third party track pieces
- Layers allow complex designs to be organised with track, baseplates, tables/baseboards and text labels kept separately – if you want them to be
- Inventory tool to allow easy counting for track/baseplates used
- You can save files, share them with friends, and import others’ designs
- Windows app only

BlueBrick isn’t just a LEGO train track planning program – it can plan cities, towns and other layouts, making it a really powerful option. Whilst simple on the surface, BlueBrick allows you to create layers, keeping baseplates, tracks, zone colours and even tables and baseboards in separate layouts to be moved around independently. It even has an inventory tool to tell you how many of each type of track and baseplate your layout requires.

The BlueBrick example above shows a possible plan for the LNUR branchline at a show, including custom track options with colours indicating different track radii. Using colour blocks, we (in this case, Henry!) have depicted key features of the scenery to allow us to see which modules are where at a glance. You can find a video guide to getting started with BlueBrick on YouTube here.
The only real downside of BlueBrick is it requires Windows to run.
